Transport to Scandinavia has its own particularities that go beyond distance. CO2-based road tolls and the toll bridges linking the two countries have a real impact on the cost of a shipment.

Denmark – a new toll system since 2025

Denmark has replaced the Eurovignette with a new toll system for trucks based on the number of kilometers driven and the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. In practice, carriers have to factor in not only the length of the route but also the vehicle’s environmental performance when calculating costs. A newer, lower-emission vehicle travels to Denmark at a relatively lower cost.

Sweden – Eurovignette and toll bridges

Sweden uses an electronic Eurovignette for vehicles with a GVW over 12 tons. Vehicles with a GVW of 3.5-12 t do not pay for the roads themselves, but they do pay to cross selected bridges (for example Sundsvallsbron, Motala, Skurubron). These bridge tolls apply to all vehicle types, not just heavy ones.

The Øresund Bridge – the key Denmark-Sweden link

Routes between Denmark and Sweden often run across the Øresund Bridge, which connects Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden, and the Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen). Both are tolled and should be included when calculating the cost of a cross-border route.

How emission rules affect transport costs

In Denmark, the toll depends on the vehicle’s weight and CO2 emission class: a newer, lower-emission vehicle pays less, and the surcharge goes up in low-emission zones. The age and emissions of the vehicle therefore have a direct effect on the price of the trip.

We explain how road tolls end up in the transport price in our article How to read a transport quote. We write about formalities in non-EU countries in Road transport to Switzerland and Road transport to the UK after Brexit, and you will find the full list of our services on our services page.

Frequently asked questions

Do tolls in Denmark and Sweden go up every year?

Scandinavian toll systems are updated regularly, and the trend in recent years has been upward, especially for older, higher-emission vehicles.

Does a modern fleet give a real cost advantage on these routes?

Yes. In Denmark, the emission-based difference in tolls is direct, and a newer, lower-emission vehicle can travel there at a noticeably lower cost than an older rig.

Do you have to pay for bridges separately from the road vignette?

Yes. Bridge tolls (Øresund and Storebæltsbroen in Denmark, local bridges in Sweden) are separate from the general vignette or road toll and are charged on every crossing.
