Geographically, Switzerland is in the center of Europe, but formally it is outside the European Union. That means transport there requires different preparation than a shipment to Germany or France.
EORI number – the basis of the formalities
Every company trading with Switzerland needs an EORI number. This applies to all businesses trading with countries outside the European Union, so transport to Switzerland cannot take place without one.
Road tolls – the LSVA III system
Since 2026, Switzerland has used only the new LSVA III heavy vehicle charge system, managed through the FOCBS e-Portal or certified EETS providers. Vehicles with a GVW of up to 3.5 t pay with an annual vignette (a sticker available at gas stations and post offices), while vehicles over 3.5 t pay under a prepaid or postpaid scheme, with a mandatory on-board unit (OBU).
Truck traffic restrictions
Switzerland has a nationwide night driving ban for trucks (10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.) and a ban on Sundays and selected public holidays (midnight to midnight) for vehicles with a GVW over 3.5 tons. The route has to be planned around these windows, because there is no way to “wait them out” without losing time.
For trade shows in Switzerland, there is also the ATA Carnet for stand elements, which we describe in our article Trade show transport – on-time logistics for exhibition stands. We discuss the formalities in another non-EU country in Road transport to the UK after Brexit, and tolls in Scandinavia in Road transport to Sweden and Denmark.
Driver working and rest time
Since July 1, 2026, new rules on working and rest time have applied to drivers carrying out international road transport to Switzerland. It is worth taking this into account when planning longer routes, so you do not run into a limit in the middle of a job.
Frequently asked questions
Does transport to Switzerland require a TIR Carnet?
Not always. It depends on the type of goods and the route. Most standard freight shipments between the EU and Switzerland use simplified customs procedures, and a TIR Carnet is needed in specific cases (for example transit through third countries).
Is the Swiss vignette valid for the whole year?
The vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 t is an annual one and is valid for the given calendar year, regardless of the number of trips.
What is the penalty for driving a truck in Switzerland during restricted hours?
Inspections and fines for violating the night and Sunday bans are routine. It is better to plan the route with a sufficient buffer than to risk a fine and lose time at an inspection.
